Bachelor's degree IT with an MBA

A new overseas programme allows Indian students to simultaneously pursue a Bachelor's degree in information technology along with an MBA, writes Poonam Jain.

University of Cincinnati, US, has announced an accelerated programme allowing Indian students to earn a Bachelor's degree in information technology while concurrently pursuing their MBA. The new IT-MBA programme will allow students to gain both, an undergraduate and graduate degree together. In this new programme, students will have to take one or two course/s more than the typical course load.

"Through this intensive work, they will eventually incorporate graduatelevel courses with their undergraduate coursework. By mixing graduate and undergraduate coursework in their final years, they will be able to achieve both degrees in less time than if they were to attempt them separately," says Charlie Schwartz, assistant director for admissions at University of Cincinnati

Students also earn over 18 months of full-time paid work experience through the UC Cooperative Education (co-op ) programme. "Usually Indian students are restricted by the US law to work on-campus for a maximum of 20 hours per week. However, because this programme has the coop work experience integrated into its curriculum, this restriction does not apply," says Schwartz. Students gain both technical expertise and business acumen and graduate with skills required to be successful in today's competitive global market.

Admission:

The university has intakes in August and January for the IT-MBA programme. The deadline for the next intake (August 2014) is December 1, 2013

Scholarships:

Students can receive scholarships ranging from $5,000 up to the full cost of tuition, $25,000 per year. All applicants are automatically reviewed for scholarships

Eligibility criteria:

Students must complete an online application; submit past three years academic records, and SAT scores

COST: Cost of tuition for one year of the programme is $25,000 USD

Fund Pledge

Columbia Business School announced today that Ronald O Perelman, chairman and CEO of MacAndrews & Forbes Holdings Inc. and a member of the School's Board of Overseers, has pledged $100 million to Columbia Business School. The gift will be used to develop a new facility that will strengthen the school's innovations and programmes that are creating the next generation of global business leaders.

Biz Wizards

The third edition of the IESE Private Equity Competition (IPEC) saw participation from many Bschools . At the event, IESE Business School claimed the top prize. INSEAD Business School was the runner up, with London Business School taking the third place. How to explain exam results to your parents

Sometimes parents have high expectations regardless of how you perform. Expectations depend on the person.
While some parents would be very happy that their child scored 90 percent, others may be disappointed.
So now that you have your exam results, how do you explain them to your parents?
Plan the conversation
You know your parents the best. If you have not done well, then tell them the reasons why and what you plan to do about it
Speak calmly
Do not lose your temper or raise your voice otherwise the discussion may go out of control.

Listen to them
Your parents may be a little shocked so it may be better if you speak to them at once. They may have some suggestions so listen to what they have to say.
Make a plan
Ask your parents to help you come up with a plan so you can get better marks next time. You will need their support. Stick to the plan.
All the best!

M.Tech/M.E

What is M.Tech/M.E?

Master of Technology is a post graduate degree designed specifically for engineers. It imparts  a practical problem solving approach in engineers. In other words engineering is the practical application of science and mathematics to solve problems and it is everywhere in the world around you. This degree also provides an approach to make things work more efficiently and quickly and less expensively. Also it develops the skills to design, build, and manage ideas into reality.
The focus of this degree is to impart high level of engineering knowledge and skill in operational system design and supply chain management to achieve what is commonly termed extraordinary results.

Why M.Tech/M.E?

Demand for good engineers is high, in practically every country in the world. In the IT and electronics sectors in particular, there are world shortages of Chartered and Incorporated Engineers, and unemployment amongst professional engineers is lower than for almost any other profession. There are thousands of challenging areas in which detailed engineering knowledge is needed.
Engineers have been at the forefront of turning time into a distinguishing feature of the product creation process.  Engineers have often found themselves in key positions in industry and commerce. The reasons for this is the importance of systems technologies in any modern economy and the trends to globalization outlined.
Huge opportunity is lying ahead for the students of engineering. After passing out from respective college students are hired by many good companies. With the ongoing economic boom the significance of this degree still increases.
With an engineering degree, you may follow an interesting career as a professional engineer, which may take you down a technical route, or you may drift into a managerial role as your career progresses.

Scope of M.Tech/M.E

The key industry sectors employ Engineers
  • Aerospace
  • Bioengineering/Biomedical Engineering
  • Education and Research
  • Energy and Electrical Energy
  • Manufacturing
  • Semiconductors
  • Telecommunications

Specializations

There are enormous specializations which one can opt but to name a few:

  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Agricultural Engineering
  • Bioengineering
  • Chemical Engg
  • Civil Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Electrical/Electronic Eng
  • Systems Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering

Eligibility

You need to have B.Tech/B.E degree to go for M.Tech

Entrance Tests:

National level: GATE
State level exams: TANCET, PGCET,PGECET

Career Opportunities:

There's a great scope after M.Tech as day by day development in every area is increasing. So it is sure that there will be great demand in this field and if we talk about monetary terms than you will get a very good salary package after your M.Tech because every firm need some specialized Engineers in their field to lead their Engineering  team and an M. Tech person has higher weight age for this work.

Every engineering branch has its significance. It depends on the choice of the student. Today most jobs are available in service sector. EEE students are mostly absorbed in the core sector unlike ECE. Core sector means sectors like power. EEE has many opportunities and students are not opting for it due to lack of awareness.

Any engineering course has lot of scope. Any raw material to be converted into a product, it has to undergo many processes involving chemicals. Almost everything we use is chemically processed. India's top industrialists like Mukesh Ambani and others are chemical engineers. You can join any manufacturing industry and go towards research and development. A student of chemical engineer can also specialize in various fields like biotechnology, environmental engineering and others. If you want to move into service industry like IT, which has many branches, then functional knowledge is necessary.

Some hot fields where one can make his career after M.Tech are:

  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Computer Science & Engineering
  • Earth Sciences
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Metallurgical Engineering & Materials Science (MM)
  • Cross Departmental Programme- Materials, Manufacturing and Modeling (MMM)
  • Studies in Resources Engineering
  • Biosciences & Bioengineering
  • Energy Science & Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering & Operations Research
  • Systems & Control Engineering
  • Environmental Science & Engineering
  • Technology Alternatives For Rural Areas
